MWC-2014: Most Affordable Smartphones

For those of you who are interested in buying an affordable, up-to-date smartphone in the near future, then it is very likely that the device you will get has been presented at the Mobile World Congress. To help you with finding a good phone, we’ve put together a list of the most cheapest smartphones you can find at MWC 2014. Also, keep in mind that some of these devices are not yet released, so you might want to wait a few weeks before you can actually get your hands on them.

Cheapest Smartphones at MWC 2014

ZTE Open C

ZTE open C at mwc 2014 cheap smartphones
We knew this device would be presented at MWC 2014 some time before the actual conference, but having the opportunity to play around with the smartphone and get a feel for the Firefox OS. ZTE has risen to the task of creating a cheap smartphone aimed at developing markets, which runs the Firefox OS, but how good it runs? The smartphone is built out of quality materials, therefore it feels good and sturdy to the touch, regardless of its small size. The OS though is still a mixed bag, with the user interface being fast and easy to navigate, but has lots of rough edges waiting to be fixed. The ZTE Open C has model specs, but the company has stated that it will be priced in the low-end segment and it will be available in European markets in Q2.
  • 4-inch WVGA display
  • dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 with 512MB of RAM
  • 2MP fixed focus rear camera
  • 1,200mAh battery
Price: Not yet announced, though expected to be very competitive

ZTE Open II

ZTE open II at mwc 2014 cheap smartphones
The second smartphone which was unveiled by ZTE this year at MWC is the one with a small form-factor, ultra-budget Open II. A precursor to last year’s ZTE Open, the new device runs Firefox OS 1.3 and as far as design goes, the ZTE Open II has a plastic back which doesn’t feel cheap to the touch, its screen is small and displayed images don’t have the crispness we’re used to from modern-day smartphone, but on the plus side, it is better than many other devices I’ve seen. The device is fairly responsive, meaning that the HTML5 apps which run on it are doing their job properly, but it did lag at times, which is to be expected due to its lower-tier specs. Like the Open C, there’s no word of a US release, so stateside fans will have to find some alternatives, but in other markets it will be sold starting Q2.
  • 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 256MB of RAM
  • 3.5-inch HVGA display with 480 x 320 resolution
  • 2 MP camera and 2GB of ROM
  •  1150 mAh battery
Price: Not yet announced, but expected to be in the low-end pool
LG L40
lg-l40-dual
LG’s L Series devices were announced this year at MWC, and if you’ve been paying more attention to the stunning G Flex than to these low-end devices then you might have missed them completely. Of course, these are not as exciting as a self-healing polymer and a curved display, but nevertheless, they deserve some attention, as they are decent devices which are very affordable. The LG L40 is in the lowest position of the bunch, having the lowest specs as well. Even so, for a first smartphone it is still a viable choice especially if you want to get a taste of Android 4.4.
  • 1.2 dual-core processor and 512 MB of RAM
  • 3.5-inch display with 480×320 pixel resolution
  • 4GB of internal storage
  • 3MP rear facing camera
  • 1700 mAh or 1540 mAh battery (depending on region)
Price: Not Announced, but expected to be in the low-end market

LG L70

LG-L70
The middle-man in LG’s L Series is the L70, which is slightly better than the L40, having more RAM and better cameras than its little brother. The device comes with the latest Android 4.4 pre-installed, so users will get the chance to see all the new features of the OS, but in budget smartphone which won’t burn a hole through your pockets. The design of the device is clean and stylish and its plastic body is slim and fits easily in your hand. LG L70 is a pretty good device for users who want a modern device which works well and looks good.
  • 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM
  • 4 GB of internal storage + microSD card slot
  •  8 MP or 5 MP rear camera (depending on your region) and VGA front facing camera
  • Removable 2100 mAh battery
Price: Not Announced, but expected to be in the mid-range market

Sony Xperia M2

xperia-m2
Although the powerful Xperia Z2 smartphone and the Z2 tablet took the center stage this year, Sony has also announced the M2 smartphone, which is a mid-level device with a smart look, like what the Z1 Compact has. This affordable smartphone will come in two versions, single and dual-SIM and Sony has also mentioned that it will hit the market pretty soon, in April to be more exact. Overall, the Sony Xperia M2 is a great looking smartphone with decent specs priced very competitively.
  • 4.8-inch qHD display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels
  • 8MP rear camera with Exmor RS Sensor which features Autoscene Recognition and HDR
  • 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU
  • 2,300mAh battery with  STAMINA Mode 3.0
  • NFC technology and LTE

ZTE Grand Memo II LTE

ZTE-Grand-Memo-II-LTE
ZTE has released their own affordable device this year, which surprised some due to the fact that it is the successor of last year’s powerful Grand Memo. The new Grand Memo 2 LTE has (unbelievably) a downgraded CPU, stepping down from the Snapdragon 800 to the Snapdragon 400. The device comes with the latest Android 4.4 OS, and for a phablet, the price is pretty good, especially if you’re interested in a big screen.
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 and 2GB of RAM
  • 16 GB of storage space
  • 3200mAh battery
  • 6-inch display, 13 MP rear camera and 5 MP front camera
Price: Expected to be around $300

BlackBerry Z3

blackberry-z3
As you might know, BlackBerry announced two new devices this year at MWC, the Z3 is a touchscreen slab aimed at the mid range market, and of course, prices as such. We’ve enjoyed the device, which has a stylish design and decent specs. The Z3 has the advantage of having the latest OS that the company has released, the BlackBerry version 10.2.1, the only downside being the fact that for now it is only available for the Indonesian market. Other specs of the device are:
  • 5-inch qHD display with a resolution of 960×540 pixels
  • Snapdragon 400 dual-core CPU and 1.5GB of RAM
  • 5-megapixel rear camera and 1.1-megapixel front camera
  • 8GB of internal storage
Price: Expected to be around $200

Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini & Alcatel One Touch Idol 2 Mini S

alcatel_one_touch_idol2_idol2mini
Alcatel’s offering this year at MWC has been rich and various. The company has unveiled both smartphones and tablets spanning the entire price range. In the low-end part of the pool, we have the Idol 2 Mini, which is a decent device, even though its hardware isn’t anything to marvel at. The device is pretty responsive and its design is good. The quality materials add to the value of the device so it doesn’t feel cheap in any way. Like the Sony Xperia M2, there are two versions of the device, single and dual-SIM, and apart from the number of SIM cards it holds, the difference between them also lies in the storage space, as the dual-SIM version has 8GB of storage space, twice as much as the single-SIM version. The Idol 2 Mini S is identical spec-wise, the only difference being the addition of LTE.
  •  4.5-inch qHD IPS LCD display
  • 8MP camera at the back and a 2MP camera at the front
  • 1.2GHz quad-core CPU and 1GB of RAM
  • 4GB / 8GB storage space
Price: Expected to be around €169

Alcatel One Touch Pop Fit

POP-FIT
One of the smallest devices we’ve seen at MWC 2014, the Alcatel Pop Fit has a reason for coming in such a small factor. Alcatel has marketed this device for fitness lovers who need a small accessory which does the job of a Samsung Gear Fit, Huawei TalBand B1 or Sony’s SmartBand, but at a lower price and which more options. The PopFit has all the features which you’d find in a fitness tracker, and just to sweeten the deal, Alcatel is packaging the little smartphone with an armband and a pair of JBL headphones. The Pop Fit is small, lightweight and surprisingly fast when used, and if you want to use the device, Alcatel will start shipments in May. Here’s a look at the specs inside the little smartphone:
  •  2.8-inch QVGA display with 320 x 240 resolution
  • 1GHz MediaTek CPU and 512MB of RAM
  • 16GB/32GB of storage
  • 1000mAh removable battery
Price: Expected to be €89

Nokia Asha 230

Nokia-Asha-230
Nokia had a big presence at MWC 2014. Their booths was one of the coolest ones and their devices were also awesome. Even though the center stage was taken up by the big smartphones, like every year, Nokia has updated their Asha low-end devices. This smartphone (yes, Asha is still considered a smartphone platform) runs Nokia’s own operating system and come with a host of apps and services which allow users to keep tabs on social media, maps or news. The Asha 230 is a small factor device, but like with almost all of Nokia’s devices, it doesn’t feel cheap. The body is smooth and pleasant to the touch while the touchscreen is responsive and looks good. For more information on the Nokia Asha 230 and the Nokia 220 feature phone, take a look over our coverage.
  • 2.8-inch QVGA display
  • Quad Band 850/900/1800/1900MHz frequencies
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 33 days standby time

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Gear Fit

China’s Xiaomi is working on phone launches in India, Indonesia, and other Asian markets

Xiaomi is working on phone launches in India, Indonesia, and other new markets

Chinese phone-maker Xiaomi held an event in Singapore this morning. Aside from launching the Redmi and Mi3 phones in Singapore, Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra and Lin Bin talked a lot about Xiaomi’s ambitions around the world.
Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra explained to the event’s Singapore audience that the company will use the same customer-focused tactics in Singapore as it does in China – such as listening to users and making small changes to the product throughout its lifecycle based on what they say. Xiaomi will have a service store in Singapore that’s only for repairs, just as it does in China. Sales will be conducted online or via partner telcos, but telcos may set their own prices.

No plans yet for US and Europe

China's Xiaomi phone Barra also explained why the startup chose Singapore as its first stop in Southeast Asia – indeed, as its international HQ – by saying that it was tempted by the small but very sophisticated market, which would allow them to iterate fast. Xiaomi can then use those lessons in neighboring markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Xiaomi is also looking closely at India, Barra says, where it’s actively looking for partners. Those four, mentioned specifically by the company at today’s event, look to be the next markets for launch.
However, Barra described the US and European markets as far too difficult at the moment. And so the disruptive Chinese phone-maker looks set to focus on Asia for growth of its brand.
Xiaomi isn’t actually the first Chinese smartphone brand to look to Asia for expansion, as Oppo, Meizu, and Coolpad have been doing the same thing with their Android-based phones in the past year.

Google Brings ‘Good To Know’ Online Safety Campaign To Various Cities In India

India is a little lacking behind in the internet world. We do not have the best internet speeds and even people who have good speeds are few and far in between. This is however nothing compared to our internet protection, which is almost null in comparison. People do not know about proper internet security and for a country riddled with piracy, this is very dangerous. As part of Safer Internet Day, Google India has introduced “Good to Know” along with Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) and Voluntary Organization in the Interest of Consumer Education (VOICE) to change that. It will be a nationwide campaign aiming at making people more aware about the security and dangers pertaining to online connections. The idea is to reach schools, NGOs and industrial groups in as many places as possible.
Google Good To Know | Google Brings ‘Good To Know’ Online Safety Campaign To Various Cities In India
The campaign starts with a week-long series of educational events in Delhi. Following up, workshops will setup in different cities in the country- Guwahati, Kanpur, Lucknow and Pune.
These workshops will be organized by DEF and VOICE and will focus on digital literacy and online safety. With this, it hoped that people will better understand the dangers that need to be kept in mind while surfing online.
According to Chetan Krishnaswamy, Country Head – Public Policy, Google India- “Through the Good to Know campaign, we want to help equip millions of new Internet users coming online in India with the knowledge and tools needed to become responsible digital citizens. Internet safety begins with exercising meaningful choices when online, having an open conversation about it with our families, and teaching them the basics such as using strong, unique passwords and not sharing personal information.”
Besides DEF and VOICE, Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in), Indian Government’s agency dealing with cyber threats, Data Security Council of India (DSCI) and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), endorses the campaign.
In the words of J Satyanarayana, Secretary, Department of Electronics and IT, Ministry of Communications and IT- “This Safer Internet Day, let’s pledge to be responsible users of the Internet. This is an excellent initiative by Google, DEF, Consumer Voice and CERT-In to create awareness about the simple ways through which we can stay safe and secure online. I hope to see many more initiatives of this kind as an increasing number of Indians come online, especially the youth.”
Internet security is very important in today’s world. Many of our passwords are banking ones or important email addresses which, if in the wrong hands could cause havoc. I believe it is a great initiative and people should attend this in their respective cities and learn more about internet security.

Apple iPhone 5C Gets a Price Cut in India

If you have always had your eyes on the colorful iPhone 5C but never really have the heart to bring one home, owing to its hefty price tag, then you are in luck.

The company has revised the price of its iPhone 5C in India. The Apple iPhone 5C was launched in India at Rs. Rs 41,900 but right now most Indian online retailers are selling it below this mark. Amazon India has stacked up iPhone 5C for Rs. 37,289 but as per a new report by BGR India, some color variants of iPhone 5C are available for even Rs.36,999.

In the recent earning reports, Apple had admitted that the sales of iPhone 5C had been below the company's expectations. So, perhaps now the company is trying to boost the sales through the old tactics in the marketing books.

There are also rumours suggesting that Apple might just discontinue the iPhone 5C in near future.

LG G Flex Launched as Most Expensive Android Phone

LG G Flex in INDIA -

Finally, LG has officially launched its G Flex with a curved display in India. The smartphone is expected to be made available this month for a price of Rs 69,999. Earlier this week, it was spotted online sporting a similar price tag. At that price, the G Flex is quite easily the most expensive Android phone in the market and if it weren’t for the 64GB iPhone 5s (priced at around Rs 73,000), the G Flex would be the most expensive smartphone overall as well.

Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 :: Review and Specifications

Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 Review

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying the fact that the Galaxy Grand Duos was a huge success for Samsung and is one of the phones that cemented the company’s place as the top player in the Indian market. The Grand 2 launched at a time when the sub-Rs 20,000 price segment wasn’t a terribly exciting place and offered features such as dual-band WI-Fi, GLONASS, Full HD video recording and a large display, which no one else did. The display panel was the Achilles heel of the Grand Duos, which created two factions of users – some who despised it and others who saw past this little flaw. Honestly, we didn’t think it was that terrible like most made it out to be but then that’s just us.

Exactly a year later, we have a follow up called the Galaxy Grand 2. The successor comes with the mandatory cosmetic facelift and few tweaks under the hood to keep all the right boxes ticked. Trouble is though, this segment isn’t what it was a year back. It’s extremely cut-throat and features like Full HD displays and 13MP cameras can be easily found. So, with a higher launch price than the Grand Duos and a few changes under the hood, does the Grand 2 have a place in this segment? Can it recreate the magic of its predecessor when you have tough competition from Lenovo, Nokia, Sony and Gionee? [READ MORE...]

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro : Hands On Review :

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro review

FOR

  • 12.2-inch screen is useful
  • Specs keep up with Multi Window
  • Magazine UX is eye-pleasing

AGAINST

  • Specs match the Note 12.2
  • Just lacks the Note’s S Pen features
The largest Samsung Galaxy Tab to date made its official debut at CES 2014, coming in a range of sizes to suit all manner of ‘professional’ user. However, the top dog was the Tab Pro 12.2, physically overshadowing its smaller brethren thanks to its massive 12.2-inch screen.
We went all ten fingers on the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2′s spacious WQXGA LCD with a 2560×1600 resolution and found that the dimensions aren’t as ridiculous as they seem at first. That’s because this foot-long display was immediately made useful when we ran Google Docs, a Spreadsheet, a YouTube video and the Chrome browser in four Multi Windows.
That’s right – you can see four things running at once on the large and expansive screen. This became progressively more cramped as you went down to 10.1- or 8.4-inch displays, but even at the 12.2 iteration having four things open at once smelled suspiciously of gimmick over genuinely useful feature.

5. Balance transfer for Vodafone :-

Simplicity is always been the strength of Vodafone. Also transferring the balance is very simple . Follow the steps given below –
Dial  *131*< Amount>*< Receiver’s Mobile Number>#  ,here the amount is the balance or money to be transferred to the receiver .You don’t need to give space in between. Example – Dial *131*20*9161938364# , Rs. 20 will be transferred to 9161938364

6. Balance Transfer for Aircel :-

Transferring balance for Aircel mobile users is quite similar to Airtel. Following is the process;
Type *122*666# and call .Soon a window will appear , this will show various amounts to be transferred. Amount may range for Rs.5 to Rs.100 .Then Select the amount and then enter the receiver’s  number , press OK.
  • Limitations - You can transfer amount to a single number once a day. Rs .2 will be charged for every transfer . Funny thing is , Aircel does not guarantee for transfer and not responsible for money loss .
7. Balance Transfer for Reliance :-

The tag line of Reliance “ Karlo Duniya Mutthi ” Mai is best suited here as you can really do every transaction for absolutely free and without any mentioned conditions .
The process is also very simple –
Dial *367*3#
Enter *312*3# and mobile number.
Enter balance amount
Enter PIN. Default PIN is 1.
You’re done.
8.  Balance transfer for Uninor :-

Uninor customers just have to dial a simple code . The format is as follows –
*202*< Amount >#. Here, Mobile number is the receiver number and amount is the balance to be transferred.
  • Limitations Processing fee is Rs.2 for every transaction . You can transferred amout of Rs.5 to Rs.50 . The transaction between the same number can occur only once in a day.
