Lava Iris Pro 30 Review: The Budget Warrior

Lava

In the past couple of years, Indian smartphone makers such as Micromax are giving tough competition to their International counterparts. Some of the Indian brands have even managed to carve out a niche for themselves. Lava had recently launched its Iris Pro 30 smartphone in India. We find out whether this smartphone is worth buying or not?

What Is It?
Lava Iris Pro 30 is the flagship smartphone from Lava. The smartphone offers features such as Flip to Mute, Automatic calling/answering, unlocking smartphone by face and voice.

Who's It For?
The smartphone is essentially for people looking for a good Android option on a budget.

Design

Lava Iris Pro 30 is the best looking smartphone that the company has churned out. Incidentally, this smartphone is the first phone that the company has designed in house and all we can say is that it looks slick and classy. The smartphone weighs 114g and is 7.5mm thick. It is very nice to hold and can easily slip into the pocket.

The back cover is very thin and flexible but we were scared that if we bend it too much, we might just end up breaking it. It has a matte finish which helps in keeping the fingerprints at bay.

Lava Iris Pro 30 comes with a non-removable battery but there is a microSD slot right next to the SIM slots.

Now let's move onto the screen, which is a stunning 4.7-inch (720p) display that has a 312 ppi pixel density. The company has deployed OGS (One Glass Display, which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. The IPS screen is sharp and vibrant and has decent viewing angles.

The Best Part
The thing that makes the Lava Iris Pro 30 stand apart is the design of the smartphone. The company has paid a lot of attention on the finishing touches of this handset.

The Tragic Flaw
It was pretty miser on Lava's part to offer only 4GB of internal storage of which too just 2.5 GB of it is accessible to the end user.

The other thing that we did not like on the phone was the 8MP camera. (See the sample shot below)

Test Notes
- The display of the Lava Iris Pro 30 is great given its price point.
- It comes with a 2,000mAh battery, which you can drag the entire day.
- The Lava Iris Pro 30 comes with an 8 megapixel camera. The camera is fast and snappy but the picture quality is not that great. The camera takes decent shots in daylight, but the low-light shots have a lot of noise.
- We did test out the gesture features on this smartphone extensively though we are not a big fan of these gimmicks. In our testing we found that these features work as advertised most of the time.
- Audio/ Video playback on the Lava Iris Pro 30 is pretty decent and the device also supports most of the commonly used formats.

Should I Buy It?
The Lava Iris Pro 30 is a great smartphone to consider if you are planning to buy a mobile in the range of Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000. People who want to go with a more known brand might want to look at the Moto G by Motorola that is available through Flipkart. The other good option (though a little expensive than the Lava Iris Pro 30) is the Nokia Lumia 720.
